The Giorgi Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation, in cooperation with the Art History Seminar of the University of Basel, the Chair of Medieval Art History at the University of Fribourg, and the Max Planck Institute for Art History in Florence, and with the financial support of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia (\u2116 MG_ISE_18_2142), announces the following:<\/p>

Seasonal School<\/h2>

Tao-Klarjeti: History and Heritage \u2014 Immovable and Movable Monuments<\/strong><\/em>
<\/strong>September 7\u201316, 2019<\/p>

About the Project<\/h2>

Tao-Klarjeti is the general designation for the spiritual and cultural heritage encompassing the movable and immovable monuments created in medieval southern Georgia. It is directly connected with the historical Georgian provinces now situated within the borders of Turkey (Tao-Klarjeti, Shavsheti, Erusheti, Kola-Oltisi, and Speri). The majority of the architectural monuments are located within the vilayets of Erzurum, Artvin, and Ardahan. Most of the movable monuments (crosses and icons, manuscripts, sculptures, and others) are preserved in various museums and repositories in Tbilisi.<\/p>

The principal aim of the seasonal school is to introduce participants, on site, to the most important architectural monuments of Tao-Klarjeti and to demonstrate their historical and cultural significance within the context of Georgian history, Georgian art, Byzantine culture, and regional cultures (the Caucasus and Islamic Anatolia).<\/p>

The seasonal school will operate over the course of ten days. During this period, participants will travel both in Georgia and in north-eastern Turkey. The school will function according to the format established in the discipline of art history. Seminars and discussions will primarily take place not in classrooms, but under field conditions, whether at monuments situated in open-air settings (Kumurdo, Oshki, Khakhuli, and others) or in museum spaces preserving artefacts (e.g., the Khakhuli Icon, the Anchi Icon, the Tskarostavi Gospel, and others). In addition, lectures and discussions will be conducted.<\/p>

Participants of the seasonal school are required to study in advance the scholarly literature provided electronically by the organizers and to present papers on agreed topics. At the same time, they are expected to participate actively in discussions and to reflect the issues studied during the seasonal school in their future scholarly research and publications.<\/p>

The working language of the seasonal school is English.<\/p>

Upon the successful completion of the seasonal school, the Giorgi Chubinashvili Centre will award certificates to all participants.<\/p>

Important Information<\/h2>

The programme covers the educational process of the seasonal school. It includes transportation to the monuments during the ten-day programme, accommodation in hotels (students will share rooms), meals, and museum admission fees. Applicants are required to cover their own round-trip travel expenses, visa fees (if necessary), and travel\/health insurance, as well as to bring their own personal spending money.<\/p>

Eligibility<\/h2>

Applications may be submitted by citizens of any country who are doctoral students or young scholars. Applicants\u2019 fields of interest should include the art and culture of Georgia, the Caucasus, medieval Anatolia, or Byzantium.<\/p>

Preference will be given to students who are citizens of Turkey or who represent Turkish academic or research institutions.<\/p>
