Chubinashvili Centre, showcasing the ex-libris collection of the prominent Georgian scholar Ren\u00e9e Schmerling, preserved within the institutional archives. The collection comprises over two hundred superb, unique examples of Georgian, Armenian, Russian, and European bookplates spanning from the 19th century through the 1930s.<\/p><p>The exposition also featured several typefaces designed by Lado Grigolia, examples of miniature and studio engravings by N. Chernyshkov preserved in Schmerling&#8217;s personal archive, and contemporary bookplates executed specifically for this event by students of the Faculty of Graphics at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (under the instruction of Loretta Shengelia-Abashidze and Gogi Tsereteli).<\/p><p>Concurrently, a scholarly conference was held within the framework of the project on October 16.<\/p><p>Dr. Dimitri Tumanishvili, Professor and Chief Researcher at the G. Chubinashvili Centre, spoke comprehensively about Ren\u00e9e Schmerling as a scientist, highlighting her broad intellectual interests and invaluable contributions to the history of Georgian culture.<\/p><p>Project participant Dr. Marina Medzmariashvili, Senior Researcher at the Centre, delivered a presentation on the artistic legacy of Nikolai Chernyshkov, introducing the public both to the artist&#8217;s works held within the Schmerling collection and to archival materials recovered during the current phase of research.<\/p><p>Ms. Meri Japaridze, heir to Lado Grigolia, spoke extensively about the creative oeuvre of the People&#8217;s Artist of Georgia and Rustaveli Prize Laureate.<\/p><p>Project Director Dr. Mariam Gachechiladze, Senior Researcher at the G. Chubinashvili Centre, provided an overview of the origin and historical development of ex-libris art. Within this contextual framework, she analyzed the unique specimens from Ren\u00e9e Schmerling&#8217;s collection and reviewed the evolutionary timeline of Georgian bookplates from their inception in the 18th century to the modern era.<\/p><p>The proceedings concluded with a plenary discussion engaging graphic artists, students, and attendees. The debate centered on systemic issues arising within contemporary Georgian book graphics, addressing critical dilemmas in the development of print, digital, and artistic typography, ornamentation, and ex-libris art.
