In 1936, he graduated from the Transcaucasian Industrial Institute with a specialization in architecture. From 1936 to 1998, he taught at various higher educational institutions in Tbilisi. Beginning in 1941, he worked at the G. Chubinashvili Institute of Georgian Art History, serving as its director in 1973\u20131988 and again in 1996\u20132000, and as honorary director in 1988\u20131996. He held the titles of Doctor of Art History, Professor, Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, Merited Worker of Science of Georgia, and Laureate of the State Prize of Georgia.<\/p>

The principal focus of V. Beridze\u2019s scholarly work was the history of Georgian architecture. His books on the churches of Samtskhe of the 12th\u201314th centuries, the ecclesiastical architecture of the 16th\u201317th centuries, the urban development of Tbilisi between 1801 and 1817, and Georgian architecture of the 1920s\u20131930s are of foundational significance and set the direction for scholarly research on these periods.<\/p>

He authored monographs on individual monuments (St. George of Savane, the Katskhi Church, the \u201cMaghalaant Church,\u201d etc.), on regional architectural schools (Tao-Klarjeti), and on individual artists (S. Kldiashvili). His comprehensive works on Georgian architecture\u2014published in Georgian, Russian, and German (the latter co-authored with E. Neubauer)\u2014are widely recognized. He is also the author of the encyclopedic study Old Georgian Masters and other works.<\/p>

V. Beridze wrote a monograph on Georgian gordamokhsnebi (relief icon stands) of the 15th\u201319th centuries, as well as studies on prominent Georgian painters (D. Kakabadze, L. Gudiashvili, N. Pirosmanashvili). Together with N. Ezerskaya, he co-authored a book on Georgian fine art of the 19th\u201320th centuries. He published numerous essays on the history of the study of Georgian art.<\/p>
