On November 12, a presentation regarding the first phase of the conservation project for the major Church in Jvari Monastery at Mtskheta (Monastery of the Holly Cross) was held at the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation. The project is implemented by the Chubinashvili National Research Centre with the financial support of a major grant from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).
The objective of the project is to protect the facade masonry of the main church of Jvari Monastery from further deterioration. During the first phase, which will span 10 months, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary study will be conducted to establish a conservation strategy and develop a detailed intervention plan. The conservation project covers the sandstone masonry of the church facades (all four facades and the drum of the dome). An estimated surface area consists of 1,200 square meters.
