An expedition to Svaneti took place from July 15 to July 20, 2010, organized as a joint project between the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max Planck Institute), and the University of Basel. The primary objective of the expedition was to survey the cultural monuments of Svaneti, including their architecture, mural painting, and icon painting. Particular emphasis was placed on the study of museum artifacts, specifically icons, manuscripts, and other cultural objects (see the attached itinerary/plan).
Academic discussions were held at each site. Additionally, one of the expedition’s key goals was the photographic documentation of the monuments. The compiled photographic material will subsequently be incorporated into the Max Planck Photo Archives (Photothek).
