    Four-Year Cooperation with the Tokyo Institute of Technology

    In 2009, the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation and the Tokyo Institute of Technology agreed on a four-year cooperative framework. This four-year research project aims to assess the physical and structural condition of Georgian churches utilizing advanced technical methods. The Japanese partners will provide the project participants with state-of-the-art technical equipment.

    The initial phase of the project commenced in September 2010, focusing on the architectural surveying and photogrammetric analysis of ecclesiastical buildings. A delegation of five Japanese researchers, led by Professor Shiro Sasano, arrived in Georgia. Working alongside their Georgian colleagues, they conducted extensive fieldwork in Tbilisi, Kvemo Kartli, Shida Kartli, and Kakheti. As a result of this joint effort, comprehensive structural surveys were completed for the churches of Metekhi, Anchiskhati, Shiomghvime, Bolnisi Sioni, Tsinarekhi, Manglisi, Dzveli (Old) Shuamta, Nekresi, Alaverdi, Ninotsminda, and Gurjaani. The final two days of the fieldwork will be dedicated to Mtskheta.

    The findings from this planned research will enable a comprehensive identification of structural damage, such as cracking, foundation settlement, and stone weathering, among others. Furthermore, the study will determine the level of seismic resistance and, consequently, evaluate potential structural risks. Therefore, these outcomes are of vital importance for formulating effective conservation and restoration strategies for historical churches.
