The presentation of the Management Plan for the Architectural Ensemble of the Gelati Monastery—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—was hosted at the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation on May 15, 2015, and subsequently at the Akaki Tsereteli State University on May 19, 2015.
The preliminary draft of the Gelati Monastery Management Plan was developed by the Center between August and December 2013, commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia. From August 2014 to May 2015, with financial support from the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia, the Center executed the project titled “Preparation of the Management Plan for the Architectural Ensemble of the Gelati Monastery.” The objectives of the project entailed finalizing the management plan in strict compliance with UNESCO guidelines while integrating the interests of all relevant stakeholders.
To execute the project, an interdisciplinary working group was established at the Center, comprising both institutional research fellows and invited external experts. The completed work is grounded in an integrated approach aimed at safeguarding the monument’s Outstanding Universal Value in direct relation to the preservation and conservation of the cultural, ecological, social, and economic aspects of its surrounding environment (buffer zone).
