On May 20–21, 2010, the International Policy Forum on Urban Growth and Conservation in the Euro-Asian Corridor was held at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul. The symposium was co-organized by the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and Istanbul Metropolitan Planning (IMP). Notably, the Architectural Institute of Japan is a key pioneer in establishing international cooperation for the conservation of historic cities across Eastern and Central Asia.
Drawing upon research materials gathered over the past 7–8 years by various institutions studying historically developed urban structures, the Istanbul symposium aimed to promote balanced development models for historic cities and villages. Furthermore, it sought to facilitate the formulation of rational strategies for safeguarding cultural heritage sites and their surrounding environments. The forum also served as an essential platform for knowledge exchange and scholarly dialogue among international experts and specialists.
The Euro-Asian Corridor represents a vital connective axis spanning several continents between East Asia and Europe. Historically, Georgia and its capital have constituted an integral branch of the Great Silk Road. Consequently, within the network of architecturally and urbanistically distinctive cities and rural structures situated between the East and the West, Tbilisi’s architectural heritage and its contemporary construction dynamics emerged as a subject of significant interest at the Istanbul conference.
At this forum, Maia Mania, a researcher representing both the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre, presented a paper titled “Tbilisi – A Meeting Place of Traditions.”
