On 24 September 2011, the official ceremony for the “International Award Architecture in Stone 2011” was held in Verona, Italy, within the framework of the 46th “Marmomacc” International Exhibition of Marble, Stone and Technology. In the Residential Architecture category, the award was granted to the project “Svan Towers – Georgia”, which had been submitted by the Italian side.
Following an invitation from Mr. Vincenzo Pavan, Curator of the “International Award Architecture in Stone”, Giorgi Patashuri, a researcher at the George Chubinashvili Centre, actively participated in the preparation of the project. He compiled and transmitted the measured drawings, architectural drafts, settlement site plans, photographic materials, and the accompanying English descriptive text to the project team.
The project “Svan Towers – Georgia” has been featured in the compendium of winning entries titled Glocal Stone, 2011.
The award ceremony was attended by Mr. Nikoloz Rurua, the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.
The George Chubinashvili Centre commissioned its young researcher, Giorgi Patashuri, who specializes in the architecture of Svaneti, to compile the required documentation. This material included a concise history of Svaneti, typologies of the towers, architectural drawings (floor plans and cross-sections), site plans of fortified settlements, an art-historical study, and both archival and contemporary photographic materials. The entire body of work was translated into English and dispatched to Italy exactly one month later, in July. Documentation from ICOMOS Georgia was also utilized in the process.
In September, the George Chubinashvili Centre received a notification from Mr. Pavan, confirming that the project “Svan Towers – Georgia” had been declared the winner in the Residential Architecture category of the “International Award Architecture in Stone 2011” – an achievement to which the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation made a significant institutional contribution.
