The Oshki Cathedral, one of the most significant monuments of medieval Georgian culture located in Tao-Klarjeti, has been included in the World Monuments Fund’s (WMF) 2012 Watch List. The Fund has dedicated a specialized webpage to the monument (http://www.wmf.org/project/oshki) and has prepared and published a corresponding promotional poster.
Headquartered in New York, the World Monuments Fund has published a biennial list of endangered cultural heritage sites worldwide since 1996. The organization calls upon relevant global bodies, governments, donors, and the mass media to collaborate in rescuing these landmarks. Following intervention by the WMF, eighty per cent of these sites have undergone restoration or conservation.
This year, sixty-seven sites from forty countries were selected, including the Oshki Cathedral. The spokesperson for the project is Irene Giviashvili, a researcher at the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation. David Khoshtaria and Markus Bogisch also participated in compiling the application.
In relation to this matter, an extraordinary press conference was hosted at the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre on 12 October 2011.
