On September 8, 2019, the seasonal school dedicated to Dimitri Tumanishvili, entitled Tao-Klarjeti: History and Heritage — Immovable and Movable Monuments, was opened at the Giorgi Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation with the financial support of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia. The seasonal school was opened by the project director, Doctor of Art History Ekaterine Gedevanishvili, who introduced the audience to the working format of the school. She noted that the principal aim of the school is to present this heritage within a broad historical context, which implies not only the discussion of monuments located on the territory of Turkey, but also the study of movable and immovable monuments directly connected with this heritage (Manglisi, Kumurdo, crosses and icons preserved in museum collections, manuscripts, and others).
The speech delivered by the project co-director, Dr. Irine Giviashvili, was dedicated to highlighting the historical significance of Tao-Klarjeti. The Director of the Centre, Dr. Tamar Belashvili, spoke about the importance of international projects and identified events of this type as a strategic direction for the Centre’s future development. The opening ceremony of the school was attended by the General Director of the Rustaveli Science Foundation, Zviad Gabisonia, and the Deputy General Director, Jaba Samushia. Zviad Gabisonia spoke about the national and scholarly importance of the projects funded by the Foundation in the field of Tao-Klarjeti studies; he wished success to the participants of the seasonal school and expressed hope that similar forms of cooperation would continue in the future.
The Director of the Max Planck Institute for Art History in Florence, Prof. Gerhard Wolf, together with Prof. Dr. Michele Bacci of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and other foreign colleagues, discussed the working format of the seasonal school, emphasizing the relevance of fieldwork and outlining plans for future scholarly cooperation.
Within the framework of the seasonal school, a photography exhibition by the Centre’s staff member, Dr. Tamaz Dvali, was opened. In addition, a bibliographical exhibition was organized, presenting the contribution of the Chubinashvili Centre to the study of the heritage of Tao-Klarjeti. As part of the project, a public lecture entitled The Wall Paintings of Ishkhani by Professor Barbara Schellewald of the University of Basel is also planned.
The seasonal school will operate both in Georgia and in north-eastern Turkey; the programme will conclude in Tbilisi on September 16. From September 18, the work will continue in the city of Bern at the International Forum on Medieval Art, organized by the project partner, the University of Fribourg. Georgian and European participants of the summer school will present papers at the forum. The principal thematic focus will be the heritage of Tao-Klarjeti.
The project involves doctoral students and young scholars both from Georgia (the Chubinashvili Centre, Tbilisi State University, and the Academy of Arts) and from leading universities around the world.
