    Summer School

By chubinaengadmin on September 9, 2009

A Joint Project of the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max Planck Institute), and the University of Basel.

On September 9–13, 2009, Tbilisi hosted a collaborative project organized by the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (Max Planck Institute). Within the framework of this initiative, a lecture series dedicated to the analysis and application of new methodologies and approaches in the field was conducted for undergraduate and master’s students of art history from Tbilisi State University and the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, as well as for interns at the Centre.

Leading specialists from European universities participated in the seminar sessions, including Gerhard Wolf, Barbara Schellewald, Annette Hoffmann, Beate Fricke, Manuela De Giorgi, Bernd Nicolai, Kathrin Müller, and Vera Beyer (representing the universities of Basel, Bern, Heidelberg, and Berlin). The lecture program included field expeditions to Mtskheta, Ateni, and Kintsvisi, where the young scholars presented brief papers they had prepared. Looking ahead, this project aims to facilitate research visits for Georgian students to European art historical research centres.

The G. Chubinashvili Centre shares a long-standing historical connection with the Max Planck Institute; notably, Professor George Chubinashvili was a student of August Schmarsow, one of the foundational figures associated with the institute’s early academic tradition.

Since 2006, a joint international seminar dedicated to medieval Georgian art has been held regularly in Georgia with the support of the Ministry of Culture. Furthermore, a dedicated photographic archive documenting medieval Georgian art has been operational at the Florence institute since 2008, providing international scholars with an essential resource to study and familiarize themselves with the finest examples of Georgian cultural heritage.
