    World Heritage and Sustainable Development

By chubinaengadmin on September 24, 2014

On September 24–26, 2014, a regional conference titled World Heritage and Sustainable Development was held in Mestia. The conference was organized at the initiative of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia, in collaboration with its partner organizations: the Georgian National Commission for UNESCO, the Georgian National Museum, and the George Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation. The conference brought together representatives from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), alongside delegates from Georgian state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and field experts.

The conference sessions addressed core matters concerning the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, the strategic role and operational experience of international organizations in the management and development of global cultural and natural heritage sites, Georgia’s national policy on World Heritage, and the draft Law on World Heritage. Furthermore, the proceedings focused on the development of the Upper Svaneti cultural landscape, examining completed, ongoing, and planned state infrastructure projects in the region, alongside the outcomes of the intangible cultural heritage inventory conducted in Svaneti.

Among other scholarly papers, research fellows from the G. Chubinashvili National Research Centre, M. Kenia and G. Patashuri, presented comprehensive reports highlighting the historical Svanetian school of painting and the ecclesiastical architecture of Svaneti.
